    How It All Started

There have been several global events in recent years which have contributed to a rise in energy prices for UK residents. To help support UK residents in these challenging times, Grant Advice Helpline was set up to provide free home energy grant advice and signposting for residents who can benefit from these grants, with the goal of helping lower energy bills and fighting fuel poverty.

    COVID-19 Pandemic

The pandemic led to a significant reduction in global energy demand initially. However, as economies began to recover, there was a surge in demand which outpaced supply, causing prices to rise sharply. Disruptions in global supply chains also contributed to the increase in energy prices.

    Global Supply Chain Disruptions

Various disruptions in the global supply chain, including those caused by extreme weather events and geopolitical tensions, affected the supply of natural gas and other energy sources. The Suez Canal blockage in March 2021 is an example of such an event that had a ripple effect on energy supply and prices.

    Natural Gas Shortage

Europe experienced a significant shortage of natural gas due to a combination of factors, including reduced supplies from Russia, low storage levels, and increased demand as economies recovered from the pandemic. This shortage drove up natural gas prices, impacting electricity prices as well since natural gas is a key energy source for electricity generation in the UK.

    Russia-Ukraine Conflict

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 led to severe disruptions in the supply of natural gas and oil from Russia, one of the world’s largest energy exporters. Sanctions and countersanctions further strained the energy market, causing dramatic increases in energy prices across Europe, including the UK. The conflict highlighted Europe’s dependence on Russian energy and led to a scramble for alternative sources, further pushing up prices.

Impact of Global Energy Market Volatility

In 2023, continued volatility in global energy markets, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions, extreme weather events, and fluctuating supply and demand dynamics, further exacerbated energy prices in the UK. For example, unexpected heatwaves increased demand for cooling, while severe winters heightened heating needs. Additionally, geopolitical instability in key energy-producing regions led to unpredictable supply disruptions. This volatility affected the cost of importing energy, which in turn led to higher prices for consumers and businesses in the UK.
